Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) is traveling to East Germany to play a festival. Unbeknownst to him, there are nefarious political machinations underway, spearheaded by the East German government. As much a love letter as it is parody, Top Secret! is playful and hilarious, refusing to take itself too seriously. Less a coherent movie and more a Best Hits of the directing trios comedic stylings, you certainly don’t watch this one for the plot. (Jim Abrahams / David Zucker / Jerry Zucker, United States / United Kingdom, 1984, 90 min.)
“Top Secret! is a work of pure transcendence: a story of love, deception, and courage played with perfect earnestness; the absurdist jokes come fast and furious.” –Washington City Paper
