The Card Counter

View Trailer Richard Roeper Review

Tell (Oscar Isaac) just wants to play cards. His spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he is approached by Cirk (Tye Sheridan), a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel (Willem Dafoe). Tell sees a chance at redemption through his relationship with Cirk. But keeping Cirk on the straight-and-narrow proves impossible, dragging Tell back into the darkness of his past. THE CARD COUNTER is the latest from FIRST REFORMED writer/director Paul Schrader, whose other writing credits include TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL. (USA, 2021, 112m.)

With spectacularly haunting original songs by Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club accompanying the journey, Schrader expertly captures the equal parts exciting and depressing worlds of casinos, where the slots are always jangling and the bar is always open.” – Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times
