A SONIC WAVE Weekly and CLOSE UP screening

Monday, July 8 7:00p – post-screening Q&A w/ dir. Augusta Palmer.

A deeper look at the 1960’s famed music fest, the Memphis Country Blues Festival, with an emphasis on the complex relationships between white creators and the black musicians. Also taking center stage are ‘60s counterculture and the toe-tapping, hip-swaying genre of Memphis blues. Including interviews with a diverse cast of festival participants and memorable performances by music legends Furry Lewis, Rev. Robert Wilkins, Booker T. Washington (Bukka) White and more. (dir. Augusta Palmer, U.S., 2024, 75m)

What is striking from the footage of the festival at the Overton Park Shell (sadly, only film from the 1969 edition exists) is seeing both Black and white audience members sitting together and soaking up the sounds. The idea of the festival organizers mounting an event showcasing Black musicians that brought together a mixed crowd amid a segregated environment appears in hindsight both courageous and groundbreaking.” —Forbes
