After learning that the wondrous experimental jazz musician Sun Ra cowrote and starred in a 1972 Afrofuturist science fiction movie featuring music by his Arkestra, should the plot even matter? The answer is yes. Sun Ra’s epic journey to settle the Black race on a new planet involves time travel, spaceships, pimps, white NASA kidnappers, and a band of teens who help spring Ra out of a trap, all in time for a breathtaking concert. (dir. John Coney, US, 1974, 85m)

“As protean and unclassifiable as Sun Ra’s music, Space is the Place is a bizarre hybrid between a 50s sci-fi b-movie and a militant blaxploitation gospel. Conceived as a vehicle for Ra’s music and Afro-Futurist cosmology, Coney’s film still shines its very own particular light.” —Brooklyn Magazine
