The 1971 Independence Day concert in Accra, Ghana’s Black Market Square featured some of the most legendary acts of the time: Wilson Pickett, Ike and Tina Turner, The Staple Singers, and Santana, all traveling together as part of a first ever truly African-American music festival. This award-winning documentary covers extensive footage of these unforgettable live performances in front of over 100,000 locals, along with the journey undertaken by the American musicians on their first visit to Africa, and their interactions with local Ghanaians in the days before the show. Fans of the movies Soul Power and Summer of Soul, especially, will want to see Soul To Soul, which has long been out of regular circulation. (dir. Dennis Sanders, Africa/U.S, 1971, 96m)

Soul to Soul will hook you. We defy anybody to watch the final half hour of this color documentary of a soul and gospel music concert, performed in Ghana, without tapping a foot… the film sticks to the concert, brilliantly evoking the performances and crowd reactions in a flow of closeups and panoramic shots, to the stabbing, pounding pulse of the music.” – New York Times

Tony Fletcher (moderator) is the author of multiple acclaimed music biographies including In the Midnight Hour: The Life and Soul of Wilson Pickett (2016) and Knock! Knock! Knock! On Wood (2020), about Eddie Floyd.
