Inspired by his own life and his love for music, writer/director John (ONCE) Carney takes us back his old stomping grounds – 1980s Dublin – to tell a story where music has the power to take us beyond the turmoil of everyday life.

14-year-old Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo in an utterly winning debut) struggles to adjust to a new school full of bullying classmates and repressive schoolmasters and to block out his parents who are at one another’s throats. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious and beautiful Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and with the aim of winning her heart, he invites her to star in his band’s music videos. There’s only one problem: he’s not part of a band…yet. She agrees, and now Conor must deliver what he’s promised. Calling himself “Cosmo” and immersing himself in the vibrant rock music of the decade, he forms a band with a few lads, and the group pours their heart into writing lyrics and shooting videos. Featuring music by The Cure, Duran Duran, The Clash, and more, this charming film reaffirms music’s ability to transform us into something greater.
