A GRITTY SH*TTY NEW YORK CITY  screening.

Thursday, May 30 7:00p

In only a brief 56 minutes, this groundbreaking documentary chronicles three days in the life of regulars from New York’s skid row (which was then on the Bowery). The nature of the film, along with the shoot-from-the-hip production was never before seen. It won the Grand Prize in the Documentary and short film Category, Venice Film Festival in 1956 and was inspirational for many filmmakers, including John Cassavetes. (dir. Lionel Rogosin, U.S, 1956, 65m)

“…few have approached On the Bowery’s achievement: empathy without sentimentality, craft without contrivance, and an unflinching eye that sees individuals striving for dignity to neutralize everyday pain.”– Slant Magazine
