A VIDEO PROJECT of the HUDSON VALLEY ORAL HISTORY PROJECT & UPSTATE FILMS
WE ARE ALL BEARERS OF TRADITION…
As Hudson Valley residents, we live among people with a wide breadth of knowledge, skills and experiences who form our local history and lore. We have expertise and beliefs that are based on a variety of backgrounds. It is important that we share them with others and pass them down to next generations of family and community members.
LEARN HOW TO PRODUCE PROFESSIONAL VIDEO…
Upstate Films, in collaboration with The Hudson Valley Oral History Project, invites you to apply to “HUDSON VALLEY LIVES,” an initial volunteer project to document the oral histories of four people in Rhinebeck by recording these interviews on broadcast-quality video under the guidance the HVOHP team. Upon completion, these videos will be premiered in December 2019, at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck.
As a volunteer field producer, you will be trained in the basic techniques of recording oral histories, as well as basic video production methods. These include research and writing, production planning, basic camera operation and framing techniques, lighting, audio recording and post-production. The project is funded by a generous grant from the Frost Foundation and there is no cost to you.
As a volunteer field producer you will be expected to attend classes, record the interviews while working in the field, write the script and edit the video. All of these tasks will be completed with the assistance of a HVOHP team leader. The schedule includes the following:
March 1 – May 31, 2019: One 2-hour class per week. In these classes we will teach you basic interviewing techniques, camera operation and image composition, basic 3-point lighting, audio recording, scripting and editing.
June 1 – June 30, 2019: Field video/audio recording of interviews
July 1 – September 8, 2019: Transcribing of interviews and scripting
September 9 – October 13, 2019: Field video/audio recording of B-roll expository footage
October 14 – December 8, 2019: Final editing
December 14, 2019 (tentative): Premier screening at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck
We are planning on producing four video oral histories, and we’re looking for 12 volunteers to accomplish this goal. We encourage people of all ages (minimum age of 16) and abilities to apply. No experience in video production or research/writing is required. Only curious people need apply! We look forward to working with you…
