Hirokazu Kore-eda unlocked a part of my heart I did not know existed. A true fear of abandonment. All his films hold the ache of love lost and rejection, but also how it can be mended by even just one simple person that’s willing to care. He slowly brings the viewer through heartbreak but also healing. It’s quite difficult to pick a favorite, but After Life and Shoplifters truly demonstrate the pure kindness of people, even in the worst of places.
