A Foreword! and Live from Upstate series event.

Upstate Films, ShoutOut, and Inquiring Minds Bookstore celebrate the publication of the book Crossing Divides: My Journey to Standing Rock, by the late Vernon Benjamin, which recounts the Standing Rock protest. The event features guest speakers, readings, and select video accounts of the 2016 protests against an oil pipeline, and updates on Standing Rock today. Speakers include: Chase Iron Eyes of the Lakota People’s Law Project (via Skype) and Wes Gillingham of Catskill Mountainkeeper.

Vernon Benjamin was a journalist, the author of the two-volume History of the Hudson River Valley, a devoted environmentalist and citizen of Saugerties. At 70, he loaded his truck with supplies and drove to Standing Rock. It was a trip that changed his life.

Reading selections from Crossing Divides are Jared Reinmuth, performer and co-author of Big Black: Stand at Attica and Patrick Wadden, co-founder and artistic director of Arm-of-the-Sea Theater.

The evening is moderated by author Will Nixon best known for Walking Woodstock: Journeys into the Wild Heart of America’s Most Famous Small Town and The Pocket Guide to Woodstock.
