A reflective, funny, and often tender documentary by Chris Wilcha, which is anchored in his childhood workplace, a New Jersey record store. From there, the film surfs between his family history, his artistic hopes, and what led him to his current job as a commercial director. The movie’s synopsis is simpler than what the film manages to capture – the gap between creative expectations and what individuals must do in order to live the life they believe they’re meant to lead. What fills this gap are unfinished projects and human connections that sometimes span years. Executive produced by Judd Apatow, who also plays a crucial part in the documentary, as he was the connective tissue between some film projects and Wilcha’s decision to move to California. (dir. Chris Wilcha, U.S., 2023, 92m)

Flipside is Wilcha’s attempt to bring his life’s work full circle, a return to the personal self-reflection of The Target Shoots First, with the distance and hindsight that 25 years of life experiences will give you.” –The A.V. Club
