After Midnight in Paris and To Rome with Love, Woody Allen lands in San Fransciso for a film starring Cate Blanchett as a former member of the one percent, who’s left high and dry when her husband (Alec Baldwin) is sent to jail for crooked financial dealings.
Reeling from a cocktail of anti-depressants, broke, and in need of consolation, Jasmine (Blanchett) moves into her sister Ginger’s (Sally Hawkins) apartment to pull herself together. As she finds a potential lifeline in Dwight (Peter Sarsgaard), a diplomat smitten with her sophistication and style, she encourages her sister to dump her loser boyfriend (Bobby Cannavale) and move toward a promising relationship with a sound engineer (Louis C.K.). But upward mobility may not always bring happiness in affairs of the heart, and Woody Allen’s latest is about the consequences that can result when people avert their eyes from the realities around them and the humanity they can’t see.
