In 1949, Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler), who had been exiled from his homeland as a teenager, returned with his daughter, Erika (Sandra Hüller), to drive across Germany during the Cold War to accept a Goethe Prize. Shot in black-and-white, it elevates the uncertainty and showcases the shadowy nature of a ruined society.

“The film, as photographed by Łukasz Żal, has been made in a spirit of nearly fetishistic meticulousness; it’s as subtle as a fine wine.” — Variety
