The voyage of the Clotilda, the last slave-trade ship to arrive in America, in 1860, left a powerful legacy. After Emancipation, a plot of land outside of Mobile, Alabama—named Africatown—nurtured the ship’s survivors and their descendants for generations since. When the ruins of the Clotilda are discovered on the ocean floor, the descendants’ powerful attempts to come to terms with the past takes new urgency. Margaret Brown’s Sundance-winning documentary brilliantly captures their process, and the ongoing battles to make a home, 160+ years later. (U.S., 2022, 109m)
