An intense and mesmerizing tale of misguided faith and thwarted romance, Beyond the Hills is the story of two young women in a remote Christian convent where archaic beliefs still regulate the life of the community.
Returning to her homeland in Moldova after working menial jobs in Germany, Alina (Cristina Flutur) is determined to rescue her friend Voichita (Cosmina Stratan) from a life of ascetic deprivation. Though the girls have shared the bond of young love since their teen years in an orphanage, Voichita is not so sure she wants to leave the convent. Refusing to leave without Voichita, Alina’s presence disrupts the religious community. As the stern but charismatic priest (Valeriu Andriuta) at its head comes to believe that Alina has fallen prey to demonic possession, he responds with a zealous dogmatism and makes it the community’s duty to chastise her soul. A brilliant psychological portraitist, the talented Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks 2 Days) fully explores the complexities of what could easily have been rendered as a simplistic contest between traditional and modern values, instead showing the increasing exasperation of the essentially well-intentioned priest with the unbearable tension that outsider values can bring to a religious community. In Romanian with subtitles.

“This new feature from Romanian director Cristian Mungiu will stick with you as one of the year’s most powerful films.”
