Renowned artist Ai Wei Wei, known by some as the Beijing Andy Warhol, has repeatedly clashed with the Communist Ruling Party of China over its abuses of human rights. Outspoken and fearless, Ai knows the dangers and the power of standing toe to toe with the Chinese authority and speaking out for a free society.
Ai is most known for his work on the “Bird’s Nest” central stadium for the 2008 Olympics, a project he denounced in the days before the opening ceremonies. His work also includes a series of black and white photographs of iconic Chinese cultural landmarks with Ai’s middle finger extended into the frame. His role as the most famous artist inside and outside of China has made his confrontations with the authorities major events in which Ai will typically broadcast live via twitter. Imprisoned in 2011 for his comments on the Sichuan earthquake, he was released after profound international pressure forced the government to back down. In English and Mandarin with subtitles.
